A person doesn’t put much thought about their sense of hearing believing it will stay with them until the end. Unfortunately, people can lose their hearing and a person doesn’t even have to be well advanced in years. The most important thing is to figure out what causes hearing impairment in the first place, how it does it and how it can be treated. This site teaches you about free hearing test.
As a birth defect, hearing loss is a very big problem as it has been proven to be the most common birth defect among babies. Losing the sense of hearing is not fixed on only adults and senior citizens, but young people as well. Hearing disorders are also caused by eating medication, experiencing trauma or just being sick.
One such example that is the most common cause of hearing loss is due to long term exposure to environmental noise. People who live near airports, freeways, near a construction site are most likely to experience problems with hearing as they grow older. On a smaller scale, using power tools like drills and cutters and not wearing protective hearing equipment can also cause damage.
Methods to treat hearing impairments is through the use of what is called hearing aids. There are more than one kind of hearing aids available to treat hearing problems and each one has their own advantages and disadvantages. All hearing aids, no matter what size or shape, will ultimately be an amplifier of surrounding sound to the user. Read this site if you want better hearing information.
The classifications of hearing aids depends on where the tiny device is worn by the user. Hearing aids that are worn behind the ear and is made up of a case, tube and ear mold are called BTE aids. The main advantage of using the BTE type of device is it is worn outside the ear so moisture, earwax does not impact the whole device only the earpiece which can be replaced at a substantially lower price than the whole device.
Another type of hearing aid is what is called a bionic ear which is basically an inner ear or cochlear implant. The device is implanted surgically underneath the scalp and right behind the hearing impaired ear. The bionic ear is made to work similarly like the real cochlea and that is to gather the surrounding sound, convert these into electronic impulses, then transmits these to the brain through electrodes.
A cochlear implant is made up of a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, receiver, stimulator and many tiny electrodes. These implants cost an arm and a leg and are only provided for in medical centers in developed countries around the world. To assure the patient a high chance of success, the history of hearing problems need to be checked, as well as the current hearing and health situation of the subject.
In a few years patients may not need mechanical replacements or hearing aids, as there might be a new technology called gene therapy. Gene therapy is a solution where new cochlea cells are grown specifically for patients. There is nothing definite yet with gene therapy, and the only thing a person can do is hope for the future.
No one can say for sure when they will lose their sense of hearing, but the hearing treatments provided are a gist of what can be done in light of it. A person has different needs and it is the same with hearing treatments, so the best way to find out which is which is to go see a doctor. It is hard to imagine a life without hearing.
